Understanding Ayurveda's Perspective

The Ayurvedic treatment aims to stabilize the Vata dosha and rejuvenate the body’s tissues.

Key Ayurvedic treatments for CP include:

1. Herbal Medications: Specific herbs are prescribed to nourish and strengthen the nervous system and support overall growth and development.

2. Panchakarma Therapy: This detoxification process is tailored to individuals to cleanse the body of toxins that may be affecting neurological health.

3. Massage Therapy: Regular Ayurvedic massage with medicated oils can help improve circulation, relax muscle stiffness, and enhance motor functions.

4. Yoga and Pranayama: Incorporating gentle yoga poses and breathing exercises can significantly improve flexibility, strength, and mental clarity.

Diet and Lifestyle

An Ayurvedic diet for CP focuses on nurturing and easy-to-digest foods that support the growth of healthy tissues and calm the nervous system. Regular routines and a supportive environment are also emphasized to provide stability and promote well-being.

Cerebral palsy is a neurological condition caused by brain damage that affects muscle tone, posture, and movement. It is a congenital disorder that affects infants. It is typically identified when children fail to meet developmental milestones. Dr. Kiran B Nair, CEO of Vaidya Healthcare Hospital in Perumbavoor, Kerala, talks about different types of cerebral palsy and their Ayurvedic treatments.

"Depending on which part of the brain is affected, cerebral palsy can be of various types," explains Dr. Kiran. Spastic cerebral palsy is caused by damage to the motor cortex or the pyramidal tracts. Cerebellar damage causes ataxic cerebral palsy and hypotonic cerebral palsy. Athetoid/dyskinetic cerebral palsy is caused by damage to the basal ganglia and/or the cerebellum. "Each case is unique, and our Ayurvedic therapy is tailored to each child's specific needs," Dr. Kiran says.

According to Dr. Kiran, the majority of cerebral palsy patients who come to Vaidya Healthcare have spastic cerebral palsy. These children's muscles are stiff and their reflexes are slow, making movement difficult and awkward. Spastic cerebral palsy can be further classified based on which body part is most affected by the condition. The hip and leg muscles are affected in spastic diplegia. These children frequently have difficulty walking and have scissoring movements because their knees are pulled inwards. One side of the body is affected by spastic hemiplegia, while all four limbs are affected by spastic quadriplegia.

"Many children with cerebral palsy also have intellectual disabilities, vision, hearing, speech, swallowing problems, and so on." As a result, it is critical that we design the treatment in such a way that it addresses the issues that each patient has," explains Dr. Kiran. Every aspect of cerebral palsy is addressed at Vaidya Healthcare to ensure that the quality of life is greatly improved.

"There is no cure for cerebral palsy in modern medicine. They are more concerned with adapting the child to their disabilities through occupational therapy, orthotic devices such as braces and splints, or sedating them to relax the muscles and prevent convulsions. Ayurvedic therapies, on the other hand, aim to treat symptoms while also reversing brain and muscle damage," says Dr. Kiran. To treat cerebral palsy, the doctors at Vaidya Healthcare recommend Panchakarma therapies such as Shirodhara and Shiro-Basti, as well as Basti (enemas). Medhya is a class of medications used to treat brain damage and seizures. Special medications are administered to strengthen and relax the muscles.

"To achieve the desired effect, these treatments must be performed at our facility at least once a year for a minimum of 6-7 years." This means that the children and their parents form strong attachments to our physicians and staff, and we treat them as if they were family," Dr. Kiran explains. Every improvement and milestone that each child achieves is a feather in the cap for Dr. Kiran and his team at Vaidya Healthcare.
